I am baffled by the negative remarks about this outstanding wine bar. Could it be that the authors of those other reviews are really just jilted girlfriends of the Bar Veloce staff? The interior is modern and cool - the muted lights set off the natural wood appointments but are not too low. The music is an excellent selection of classic and contemporary jazz - playing at just the right volume. The clientele ranges from highbrows to village artists, and the resulting vibe is great. The gentleman serving us (I believe his name was Tom) is incredibly knowledgeable and attentive. He started us off with a glass of Nebula - a light white wine that I enjoyed immensely. He then expertly guided us through an amazing selection of red wines that culminated in some robust cabernets. The food at Bar Veloce is its own art form. One combination of truffles, olive oil, and chick peas over a thin wine biscuit arrested us until we could express our awe. Nobody will take this review seriously unless I say something negative, but I refuse to do it...if you have any sense get to Bar Veloce while you can still find a seat.

Kind of a shame

The wine and food here are superb. We had practically one of everything on the menu, and tried 3 different wines. Exceptional product. The atmosphere is a little sterile and will seem dated in a few months, but OK. My big complaint is the service, which was lousy. No one greeted us when we entered (there was only one other customer in the bar), and the bartender was what I like to call an "order taker", nothing more. No hospitality, no helpful suggestions...despite the fact that we were there for 2 hours and spent 100 bucks on panini and wine. If you love wine bars, try 'inoteca on the lower east side, or the wine bar beside Il Bogatto in the east village.
