If you're going to have kerosene sprayed on you by a raving lunatic waving a gun and screaming about the evils committed by white people, then this narrow, beige, high-tech-Italian bar's Second Avenue location, with its platters for two and excellent wines, is the place to be. Just make sure to have some brave blondes around to tackle the hostage-taker, the way the bar's patron saints, Anne Margaret and Annie, did that fateful night in June 2002. This being New York, the stylish spot for after-work or pre-movie drinks hasn't gotten any less popular since it became a crime scene. — Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld

A disappointment

My biggest complaint here is the noise level, the music was played so loudly that my friend and I nearly had to shout to hear each other, and we almost left to go somewhere else. The wine selection is decent, but the sandwiches are nothing special.

Last night I asked for arugula instead of radicchio in my pressed sandwhich and I was informed by the owner, who was drunk off his own sense of self-importance and high from sniffing the wax in his mustache, that there are "no substitutions as a matter of principle; the recipes are perfect the way they are." Apparently they can't substitute one type of pretentious greens for another at Bar Veloce.
