The Bastianiches aren't the only ones with a Friuli fixation. This handsome two-level restaurant features dishes inspired by that region like polenta and sauteed John Dory in brodetto, not to mention Friulian wines and plenty of prosciutto di San Daniele. As explained on the menu, the legend of the Barbaluc (a kind of elfin spirit of vino who resides inside your wineglass) sounds like something out of The Lost Weekend, but that hasn't deterred the Ciprianiesque crowd already packing the chic upstairs bar. — Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld
If you want a place to gather with your firends or colleagues for a great drink in an exciting environment... well Barbalùc is the place.
The wine selection is superbe -predominantly Friuli- with unique whites (Friuli Tocai and Sauvignon Blanc) and selected reds (Sicilian Cabernet and Nero d'Avola or Toscan Chianti).
The food is excquisite -also predominantly Friulian (sometimes with a great twist). From the unique Fricco to the Tuna Tartar with Fenel, and the Rabbit Ragut. Yum!
The Ambiance is just beautifyul. The owner is very personal and friendly. The Chef is obliging and creative. The Staff are handsome and pleasant.
I am hooked. I cannot let a week pass without sepnding 3 to 4 nights drinking with friends or having a romantic dinner with my wife!
A True Ground Breaker in High Class Italian Cuisine!
I had a wonderful dining experience at Barbaluc. I've been there about 5 times already and the food is absolutely incredible. The chef truly captures and art, class and cultural aspect of the Friulian cuisine, especially the Risottos of the day and the Gnocchi with Rabbit Ragout. Gualtiero Marchesi (Italy's #1 chef) would be proud of the cuisine served there. The ambiance in the downstairs dining room is warm and relaxing, a perfect combination to a great meal! Upstairs is hip and fun with a clientel of people from Europe and mostly American. The desserts are a truely artistic and esquisit. A definete 10 on desserts! I don't think there is another restaurant out there in NYC that can compete with the architecture, classiness and culinary skills done at Barbaluc! Phenomenal!
