The quirky little bistro Barmarché picks up the quickening pulse of this neighborhood just east of Soho. This patchwork of country furniture, whimsical art, and plastic-cube-enclosed crystal chandeliers took a while to settle down. But they manage somehow to dispense perfect shrimp in a super-creamy killer risotto from the pocket-size kitchen. The house burger is a juicy triumph. A duck-confit-and-frisée salad tumbled with banana may sound bizarre, but it tastes just right. There's just enough vinaigrette tang to offset the sweetness of goat-cheese brûlée with roasted beets and blueberries, though our foursome would prefer toasted rather than candied walnuts in the pear-and-frisée salad with Danish blue cheese. I don't often encounter a seviche too acidy for me, but tonight's red snapper in mango-citrus broth has overwhelming pucker. The lush caramelized-onion-olive-caper pizzetta-of-the-day sits on a toughened crust. And the sugar churros to dip into caramel sauce is a finale to share. The sound system escalates at about ten—night-is-beginning sounds for the youngish crowd. — Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld
I will NEVER return. The atmosphere is great and very romanticÂ… would be a great place for a date. That is, if your date doesnÂ’t eat. Aside from my salad the entire meal was awful. I had the misfortune of ordering the risotto with seared sea scallops. The risotto was dry and carried the taste of Uncle BenÂ’s rice. The scallops were obviously not fresh and honestly was the worst stab at seafood I have ever consumed. Next, the mushrooms were certainly canned and while I can perhaps excuse poor quality seafood, edible mushrooms can even be purchased at Food Emporium. The final thing that put me over the edge was my expresso to accompany dessert. Not really the quality, but its absence. Our desert arrived at our table after a sluggish 20 minutes and finally when the check hit our tableÂ… the absent expresso was certainly on the bill. I must say, when I pointed at the mistake the waiter did remove the charge for the dessert (and the expresso), but overall I was severely disappointed. This was the worst meal I have had in New York City; this includes a comparison to Wok n Roll.
I've come here 5 times now and it is long overdue that I give barmarche the credit it deserves as a fabulous restaurant that is perfect for any situation. I've come here on a business dinner, on a date, and twice with family members. The cuisine is different, creative, and absolutely delicious. The salmon tartare is a must, as well as the bass taquitos. The scallops are excellently prepared with a demi-glaze reduction and for meat lovers the lamp chops and sirloin steak are buttery and tender. I don't think I've ever seen 'churros' anywhere not from a street vendor, but please don't leave without trying these. The service could not have been better. This is officially my favorite restaurant.
