Profile

Basik’s sterile concrete floor and unfinished walls are warmed by wooden ceiling beams and a black nineteenth-century butcher-block bar salvaged from an abandoned packing plant. The all black façade is a drastic change from the space’s colorful predecessor, Phoebe’s Cafe, which is remembered in Phoebe’s sandwich, a tasty mix of vegetables between naan bread. The namesake hot dog with relish, onion, and celery salt is joined by a Wisconsin model (house mustard, onion and sharp cheddar). Mac and cheese comes baked in a small cast iron skillet, while the hippy roll is an oversized pig-in-a-blanket: a doughy-wrapped spicy sausage with peppers and onions. Smaller plates include a deviled duck egg, jamón serrano, and ratatouille crostini with tomato. The back room has a couple more tables and access to the 35-person backyard garden space. A short list of house cocktails and craft beers is joined by sharable 40-ounce punch bowls.
