Hyperdiscerning types have insisted for years that if you’re craving ‘cue in New York City, you’re out of luck. In some ways BBQ is exhibit A. Awash in chrome, neon, and shiny black-and-white furnishings and fixtures, the restaurant has a retro-dingy diner feel with a thrift-store couch serving as its makeshift lounge outside the shabby bathrooms. The food hits the four basic comfort-food groups: barbecued, deep-fried, rotisseried and heart-attack-inducing. But the flavors are derived mostly from an unremarkable sauce or a fairly insipid batter. Ribs are more bone than meat; nachos and macaroni and cheese feature the kind of liquid Cheddar you’d associate with the fairground. Still, prices are low suggesting that maybe BBQ stands for “budget before quality,” which has its place as well.
