Could the cupcake be improved? The partners behind Bee's Knees Baking Co. thought so; their signature cake-cups have been a hit at weddings and parties since 2010, and they expanded into their first brick-and-mortar location in the West Village two years later. Cake-cups, prepared so that each bite contains the perfect ratio of cake to frosting, look as cute as they are fun to eat (with little spoons, of course). The shop nurtures a comfortable atmosphere around its communal table, where you can spread out with papers and a laptop or lean in with a date while you share one of the city's best red velvet experiences. A clear plastic container (available in the standard five-ounce size or a smaller "flight") showcases a thick layer of cream cheese frosting sandwiched by fluffy, moist layers of delicate red velvet cake. A roster of ten flavors, like chocolate salted caramel and lemon raspberry, rotates through the menu along with seasonal offerings, which can be enjoyed with drinks from Counter Culture coffee and tea company Sweet Disposition.Recommended Dishes
