Profile

Havemeyer's Best Pizza makes big promises but delivers only modest pleasures. The venue’s credentials impress: The minds behind Bushwick favorite Roberta’s and a former chef from Keith McNally's Pulino's now fire pies in a century-old brick oven. The space also has refreshingly casual airs: Its nondescript, white-walled interior is attended by an easygoing staff and decorated with nothing but friendly paper-plate neighborhood graffiti; a by-the-slice menu goes against the latest crop of haute, sit-down-only pizza houses that use atmosphere and obscure ingredients to justify inflated prices. The pies themselves are better made than most, but underwhelm. Toppings are a must as the New York-Neapolitan crusts are thin and light on sauce, cheese, and much distinctive flavor; a white ricotta pie and a square “grandma” version topped with pureed anchovies offer a bit of variety.
