You don't have to be a collector to find a compelling reason to visit Sotheby's--not when there's a serious restaurant like Bid just off the lobby. Executive chef Matthew Seeber (hand-picked by consultant Tom Colicchio) serves seasonal Americana like braised lobster with corn relish, sauteed quail with smoked bacon, and roasted lamb with Brin d'Amour. Relish desserts paired with dessert wines, or a house cocktail, and pretend that the rotating artwork is part of your private collection.

Spanish mackerel ceviche ($14); braised Nova Scotia lobster "chowder" ($30); roasted venison saddle ($32)

Perhaps it was better when it first opened but now that it is settled in the service is fair, the food mediocre overall. The crab appetizer was on the edge of freshness and had the taste of long residence in the refrigerator although the portion was large but the crab itself tasteless. Butter on the table is a small portion and mushy soft yellow, far from fresh and is available with tasty bread served sporadically by poorly supervised busmen. If you want more butter you have to ask for it. The margerita pizza has a delightful thin crust but is overwhelmed with greasy cheese. The tuna is OK and the steak the same, just not great. The rootbeer sorbet is delicious but the spongecake spongy to a fault, difficult to believe. The vanilla ice cream is good and should be given that you have a choice of vanilla or chocolate and a couple of sorbets. Doubt this will last long but the decor is nice and it is a pleasant place to spend an evening but the food misses overall, sorry to say.
