Flatiron hole-in-the-wall Blue Dog Cafe offers premium eats, but leaves no room for a casual sit-down lunch. An ideal grab-and-go spot for coffee and soup/sandwich deals, the Blue Dog falls short on space and atmosphere. Fortunately, most selections on its sharpie-spun menu live up to their slightly inflated prices: Coffees are generous, quiches are fuller than they need be, and split pea soup is a thick, velvety broth. A plethora of sandwiches anchors the menu—they’re stuffed with various vegetables, topped with excellent house condiments like a mild chipotle mayo, and prepared with a meat-to-greens ratio fit to satisfy those wary of calorie counts. Massive cookies and an array of absurdly rich frosted cupcakes (including a lush peanut butter cup variety) offer their own attraction. Unfortunately, afternoon lines drag on, and mild claustrophobia may prompt some patrons to retreat with their rations to the relative comfort of the cubicle.Recommended Dishes
