Profile
This trendy Korean spot flaunts conversation-conducive bamboo booths, a house-music pulse, and its own Zen pebble garden. Straight-from-Seoul chefs update traditional dishes with a lighter touch (read: less oil). Appetizer standouts include the mandoo dumplings and scallion pancake “pizzas;” hearty soups, stews and egg-topped bibimbap—made with spicy pork, eel, or vegetables—are a good foil to the shochu-infused cocktails. A spacious back room is reserved for grill-it-yourself barbecue with a small terrace open to smokers. — Karen Tina Harrison
I have been here roughly ten times over the past 2 years, and I really enjoy it. The food (I have only had vegetarian dishes) has always been delicious, except that they tend to serve it arbitrarily (appetizers might come after everyone has their meal; meals come at different times). The ambiance is warm and comfortable. Aside from the one night where they just kept looping Maroon 5 CDs, eating there is very chill. Also, while the Sojoo selection isn't huge, they have a good mix of sweet, dry, and middle of the pack.
We have been to bonjoo before several times over the course of a year. But since this was our third bad experience in a row, I have decided to write a review. Basically, without directly comparing this restaurant to nearby Dok Suni's, this restaurant is not very good. We ordered the duk bo ki which had at least one completely uncooked piece of duk. The rest of the duk was very undercooked and had a slimy, unsatisfying taste. The service is pleasant and the decor is nice (especially with booths) and taking credit cards goes a long way against competing cash only East Village establishments but when the food is this bad it is hard to really find a silver lining.
