Boulton & Watt sits at the southern border of Alphabet City, but its wide-open room, communal tables, and appealing American comfort food feel more like the Midwest. Servers look relaxed in denim shirts, and antique shop finds and salvaged goods from old warehouses add patina to the steampunk interior. Chef David Rotter, who owns Bushwick's 983, nails his rigatoni macaroni and cheese, which pairs with nearly every drink on the menu, whether it's beer flowing from the personal tap system at the table or cocktails that incorporate agents from Boulton & Watt's pickling station. There’s lighter fare as well, like quinoa salad and a perfectly seasoned chickpea, eggplant, and kale veggie burger. Rounding things out are two chocolate desserts: a souffle, and a "serves at least two people" cookie that, in a charming touch, comes with a growler of milk.Recommended Dishes
