Profile
Sprawling at the end of Brooklyn, near the base of the majestic Verrazano Bridge, this roomy, chrome-and-pastel-colored diner gives the impression that it’s been mysteriously transported from some other state with lower real-estate values—say, New Jersey. It’s even got a parking lot. Once inside, however, the restaurant’s Bay Ridge provenance is clear. The menu is the familiar overstuffed, multi-page compendium of round-the-clock breakfast dishes, sandwiches and burgers (deluxe and otherwise), comfort-food dinner specials and desserts. There’s also a preponderance of seafood, such as swordfish, calamari, and even lobster. The stuffed baked clams are a hands-down winner, overflowing with lush, creamy filling, but the more simply prepared broiled scallops, halibut, and sole showcase the food’s freshness. Sides are equally simple and tasty: zesty onion soup, sautéed escarole and a fluffy baked potato served in foil with a generous dollop of sour cream. By meal’s end, if the rich cheesecake isn’t enough to prove this diner’s authenticity, take note: they’ll also make you an egg cream.
