Profile

The Brooklyn Commune aims to juggle the roles of café, restaurant, corner store, and stroller storage unit for this neck of Windsor Terrace. The space resembles a roomy market, with minimal seating and spare wood-and-ceramic tile décor. Though it lacks a real kitchen, the Commune’s ingredients and preparations are usually excellent. Lunch standouts include grilled panini-style ciabatta sandwiches like slow-roasted pork with caramelized onion, pickled peppers, Swiss cheese, cilantro aioli, and a handful of low-salt chips. A rich multi-cheese macaroni sports a thick cheddar crust and a pleasantly pungent aftertaste. Meat-free items like a blasé mixed-greens-tofu scramble and a tempeh-lettuce-tomato sandwich overwhelmed by tomato sauce prove tepid, but breakfast (which late brunchers should note is available only until noon) brings a downright decadent plate of French toast with caramelized bananas and local maple syrup. Table service doesn't come naturally to the Commune, so it works best as a quick-stop market offering takeout and a tiny selection of seasonal goods such as house-made cheeses, jellies, salts, and spices.
