In Midwood’s Little Pakistan, a handful of restaurants do brisk business with locals, despite the dampening effect of immigration crackdowns. This prime example benefits from its proximity to a mosque. Inside the small, brightly lit, mirror-lined room, men gather at tables or queue up at the rear for Urdu-language newspapers and large carry-out trays of food. The menu over the open grill may or may not be accurate, so the point-and-ask method works best. Fiery deep-fried vegetable pakora, made with whole cumin and coriander seeds, will open your pores and sinuses. Chicken tikka in a creamy tomato sauce is rich and balanced, and like most else here, carries a curry punch. Yoke-yellow dall simmered with okra is more subtle and appropriately matched with a delicate basmati rice tossed with chickpeas and cinnamon sticks. Lamb kabobs, grilled over an open gas fire, are best chased down with thickly sweet mango lassi. Kheer, a warm rice pudding scented with cardamom and rose water and topped with almonds, soothes after the fire.
