Tucked into the 53rd Street restaurant row between Second and Third Avenues, Bunchberries stands out for its bright, perky atmosphere and fresh, largely organic food. Whether you’re taking out or eating in the large, softly lit dining area in back, the healthy breakfast and lunch fare will summon you back for more. In the morning, they serve omelettes with various add-ins, breakfast wraps made with fluffy eggs, organic muffins, granola, and so on. At lunchtime the place is packed, but lines move rapidly. The kitchen makes a mean organic PB&J with bananas on whole wheat and a tasty turkey burger, as well as a no-nonsense Philly cheesesteak and a traditional Reuben for the high-cholesterol crowd. Any kind of sandwich can be ordered at the counter; for ready-made sandwiches and wraps, take your pick of organic egg salad, grilled tofu, black bean, or spicy Asian chicken salad. The hot and cold salad bars also draw a crowd. The fresh juices and surpassingly thick fruit shakes are consistently the best in the area.
Recommended DishesSpicy Asian chicken wrap, $6.25; roast beef and horseradish sandwich, $6.25; grilled portobello and spinach pasta, $9.35; papaya paradise smoothie, $3.75
