The Florida-based franchise BurgerFi, short for BurgerFication of the Nation, may seem like a Shake Shack knockoff, but it’s not. Industrial Edison bulbs and reclaimed wood tables are familiar, but chairs made from recycled Coke bottles and food from humanely raised animals set this modern fast-food company apart. Each juicy Angus burger is made to order on a BurgerFi stamped bun with creative toppings such as chili, Peter Luger steak sauce, hickory bacon with maple syrup, or a fried egg. Consult the not-so-secret Secret Menu for additional combinations, including hand-cut fries—crispy on the outside and soft in the center—served with Parmesan and herbs with garlic mayo. Every burger and specialty dog, like the Chicken Apple Dog with sweet chunks of apple rolled in the crispy casing, can be ordered “green style” wrapped in iceberg lettuce instead of a bun. Although the lettuce reduces grip traction, turning a double-patty burger into a fork-and-knife affair, it doubles as a crispy wedge salad when paired with the secret Burgerfi sauce. And unlike other burger chains, the vegetarian options here are more than afterthoughts: The quinoa burger can be ordered on top of the angus burger in the ½ + ½, but it is better on its own, where the lightly crispy, creamy patty receives the spotlight it deserves.
