Buttacup's fusion cuisine—a mélange of Caribbean, Soul and Asian—mirrors the multi-ethnic mix of its Fort Greene home, and the prices reflect the neighborhood's ongoing gentrification. "Flavor is fleeting," is their motto, attesting to their desire to outlast whatever the moment's gastronomical trend and offer a little something for everyone. There's a Cantonese-style salt and pepper shrimp appetizer, half-pound sirloin burger with caramelized onions, portabella mushrooms and goat cheese or steamed cockles in spicy peanut sauce. The décor tries for posh-tropical: ochre walls, red velvet curtains, cheetah-print fabric around curvilinear booths. Atop the spiral staircase, is a second dining room—good for groups—and downstairs at the bar they serve specialty drinks like Ghetto Heaven (watermelon-infused vodka) or pear martinis. For some diners, Buttacup's explosive flavors might be a tad overwhelming, and even if you skip the sweet potato pie or red velvet cake, most dishes are painfully sweet. But it's a good gathering spot for locals, who can enjoy live jazz for Sunday brunch or DJs Thursday through Saturday evenings.
