Tucked into a side-street near Times Square and on the far reaches of Little Brazil, Cabana Carioca serves boldly flavored Portuguese and Brazilian fare in a three-level space connected by steep stairways decorated with garishly painted Brazilian-style murals, colorful nativity scenes, and patterned geometric designs. The dining rooms are simpler, with worn wood paneling that looks like a holdover from a seventies rec room, and depictions of sea scenes so washed out by years of sun—especially on the top floor—that they’ve lost almost all of their color. But despite the slightly seedy vibe, the generous portions of Portuguese and Brazilian specialties are reliably tasty. On a buffet table near the front are standard salads as well as creamy Portuguese-style mayo-and-meat concoctions. Entrees are often spicy, and come with fried potato disks and bowls of rice and black beans. Sauces on the seafood and meat dishes are anything but subtle—garlic, parsley, and onions turn the codfish bacalhau intense, and sautéed dishes doused in wine sauce turn incorporate heavy doses of onions, garlic, spices, and herbs. Not for locals, Cabana Carioca is a good "exotic NYC" bet for tourists on their way to Les Mis.
