Profile

There's a fajita on the menu because, as the friendly waiters will tell you, that's what people expect from Mexican restaurants, especially a bustling, swanky one on the Upper West Side. However, the rest of the menu is authentically Mexican, not Tex-Mex, and nicely done to boot. Start off with a margarita at the bar while you wait for a table. Then turn to a tart, chunky, addictive guacamole that arrives in a traditional stone molcajete. For a main dish, you can choose a familiar favorite like an enchilada or a satisfying but somewhat bland chile relleno, but we recommend trying some of the less familiar dishes on the menu, like the exceptional lamb shank cooked in parchment paper. The overall quality of the food makes Frida worth its high price, the one thing besides the fajita that's not authentically Mexican.

Not worth it!

We went there since calle ocho was full for brunch. We were the first table and yet the service was inefficient and slow. The quesadilla was miniature (and cost 13 bucks!), there was no complimentary chips or bread basket, the servers were rude and impolite, and the food was so-so.

Legit Ceviche

What it lacks in charm, it rocks out in authenticity. Frida is the first and only place I've had legit ceviche made fresh when I ordered it in Manhattan. They served up a great assortment of varied chiles and had some tasty street-style fish & chicken served up shredded in a clay pot with warm homemade tortillas to pack them in to. The tequila selection is phenomenal and seems to intentionally lack Paul Mitchell's Patron label. Frida isn't Dos Caminos, but it's not a place to write-off either if you're a fan of true Mexican food.
