Profile

It’s easy to forget, in this era of plastic cups and lattes to go, that coffee is a luxurious, old-world drink. A single cup at this high-minded Viennese café on upper Fifth Avenue costs $5 and comes to the table on a silver tray. There are excellent Viennese specialties like sausages, goulash, and a whole selection of strudels and chocolate tortes, but the coffee’s stimulating effects will stay with you throughout the day.

Extra

The artistic sensibility permeates the café, with its reproductions of Josef Hoffmann sconces, Adolf Loos bentwood chairs, and Otto Wagner fabrics.

Reservations are only accepted during dinner hours, Thu.—Sun., 6 p.m.—9.m.

Art Lover's Quiet Place

After a hectic and miserable long work week, it was a perfect weekend brunch for me on Saturday upstairs at the Neue Galerie before seeing the Klimt exhibition. Just sitting by the window, watching the people in Central Park, this café gives you an affordable quick European trip or the feeling of being an Upper East Side lady (or gentleman) like Jackie Kennedy Onassis. I had the Avocado Salad with crabmeat and cherry tomatoes ($18) and 1900 Vienna tea ($6.00) on a silver tray. The café is covered in dark wood paneling, a dark wood floor and a big antique marble fireplace; the chairs are Vienna style black bentwood. The portions are pretty small, but it is beautiful and elegant. The fresh baked breads were served with the food. The waiter was kind of rushing us to leave because there was a long line after Noon. When we were there, they were having a credit card machine problem and we had pay in cash. If it was working, we probably would have had dessert too. The building itself is rich and beautiful, and this café gives you an appreciation of good taste of art, culture and atmosphere.

Great coffee & desert place!

After waiting in line for about 15 minutes, along with other Sunday afternoon coffee & desert seekers, we were seated in a lovely corner booth, with plush comfortable seating. I ordered the caffe creme & the Napolean torte. This is truly some of the best coffee I have ever had. The torte was absolutely divine & was served with a dollop of heavenly whipped cream. The dark mahogony tables & paneling made it feel very cozy on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The crowd was a good mix of people. Lots of Sunday times readers, couples, and desert afficianados. All of the deserts were delicious. Very authentic German & Austrian food on the main menu as well. Service was good, although we didn't necessarily have one waiter the whole time. Overall, we had a great experience here & would go back any time.
