Profile

This venue is closed.

Café Sevilla is a Bronx steakhouse that might not compel long-distance trips but is suited to a low-key weeknight dinner. The plaster and wood-paneled walls display a random assortment of objects, from ersatz Spanish medieval coats of arms and swords to bullfight posters to lobster taxidermy. The Spanish- and Latin-based menu mixes steaks and seafood with dishes like paella, gumbo and mofongo, offering simple, unpretentious food that’s satisfying, though at times overcooked. Steak Spanish style, a pounded strip, broiled and smothered in a flavorful, oniony brown sauce, is slightly tough, while the paella, studded with chorizo, shrimp and mussels, is compromised by a few pieces of rubbery seafood. Fried plantains (tostones) are a bit bland on their own but are delicious with their raw garlic-vinegar condiment—which is nicely washed down with the sweet, boozy sangria.
