Caffe on the Green’s website describes it as “once the home of legendary movie idol Rudolf Valentino and Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia” as if they were lovers. Were this syntactical error true, it would lend some spice to a very earnest yet ultimately square restaurant, where many a meal concludes with a waiterly chorus of “Happy Birthday.” Despite the view of the waterfront and the Clearview Golf Course’s surroundings green, Valentino’s and Fiorello’s dignified digs have suffered some institutional renovations like drab print carpeting that detracts from the antique chandeliers and beamed ceilings. But at least, the chef understands customer satisfaction. His Italian menu is lively: Appetizers are of the traditional carpaccio/calamari ilk while pastas are more diverting—attentively stirred risotto del giorno, house-produced pappardelle with earthy braised rabbit, and agnolotti with gently sweet butternut-squash filling. Entrees are ample and confidently cooked. Cacciucco alla Fiorentino features delicate seafood (including fist-sized shrimp) atop tomato-sauced linguine. Filet mignon arrives done precisely to order, with a delicious sear and real meat taste. Caffe on the Green is also justly noted for homemade desserts likes a truffle-like Chocolate Dome that a power couple like Rudy and Fiorello would have relished if they’d ever met.
