Profile

Upper West Siders ease into the evening over grilled pizzas, large bowls of steaming risotto, and robust vinos at this spirited trattoria from Nonna-owner Jeremy Wladis. The spacious interior aims to evoke pastoral Italy: Sponge-finished ocher walls, exposed brick, and paint-flecked shutters accent the dining room, while garlic braids and fat sausages dangle over the bar. Campo’s bubbly vibe—piped-in pop music, a chatty staff, plenty of flirting over drinks—has a bit of an edge over the food, though chef David Rotter, formerly of Gonzo, manages to tease a couple of creative dishes out of the straightforward Italian menu, like tart fried green tomatoes topped with a springy round of mozzarella drizzled in balsamic vinegar. The duck risotto, folded with wild mushrooms, is creamy enough, but the payoff is the truffle oil, which lends the umami finish. Tender pork braciole, ladled over Parmesan risotto, gets a sweet, nutty kick from pine nuts and raisins.
