Profile

This venue is closed.

The unwitting soul who wanders into Gramercy’s Casa Mia might indeed wonder if he has happened upon someone’s actual casa. Doily-covered end tables, framed photographs of kittens, ceramic figurines, and other bric-a-brac abound in this decidedly un-urban trattoria. The vibe is so cozy, so downright quaint, that it’s not hard to imagine Nanna herself stirring the marinara behind the kitchen’s swinging doors. The menu includes Italy’s greatest hits: pasta dishes mixed with seafood or white and red sauces, baked choices like lasagna and cannelloni, and chicken, veal, filet mignon and fish prepared with simple wine sauces and vinaigrettes. Pretension is at a minimum here: Entrees are served on standard bone china and servers sport jeans and sneakers. The food is equally unassuming. Veal parmigiana comes exactly as promised: a flattened cutlet with melted cheese and marinara; Fettuccini con Asparagi e Pollo is bathed judiciously in a mild white wine cream sauce. The comfort inherent in getting exactly what you order has made Casa Mia a neighborhood mainstay for more than 20 years. It’s not a restaurant for which you’d necessarily travel a great distance, but like 6pm supper at that favorite aunt’s tchotchke-filled apartment, when you’re here, you’re family—and that kind of welcome is not to be underestimated.
