Profile

This venue is closed.

Restaurant by day, bar scene by night, Casbah Rouge brings couscous and belly-dancing to Morningside Heights. The restaurant's small, fire-engine-red façade belies the large interior space, a cozy network of cave-like rooms hung with glowing multicolored lanterns. The cooking is above par despite occasional bumps, but lots of guests come for the scene, so the cuisine plays second fiddle to the candle-lit rooms, the dancer’s swirling scarves, and the brass hookahs that gleam in the reflected light. Starters like a mesclun green salad come with sweet cubes of purple and yellow beets and crunchy pistachios, but grilled octopus—crispy arms doused with lemony dressing—would be improved with more chickpeas and roasted peppers. Preserved-lemon and green-olive infused chicken tagine is surprisingly low on flavor; much better is the Couscous Royal, a mound of the tiny pasta encircled by tender braised lamb, chicken, and zesty merguez sausage. Dinner can end either with a tasty but unremarkable housemade raspberry tart or with a few pulls from the hookah. In Bloomberg-era New York, here’s one restaurant where patrons can smoke indoors—provided their tobacco's flavored with melon, peach or mint, or perfumed with damask rose and jasmine.
