Cevapi, savory Bosnian sausages, are the specialty at this authentic Astoria grill. These tubes of minced beef and a little onion and garlic are joined by long, thin sudzukice sausage links on the mixed meat platter, which arrives on a metal plate garnished with diced raw onions and a bittersweet purée of red peppers. A schmaltz-lined chicken kebab tops the mound of meat, which also includes veal livers, kidneys, and hearts. (On the side, ljepina—a thick version of a pita—is ideal for sopping up the juices.) As you’d expect, the space, with its copper-colored tables, is frequented by Bosnian expats first and a smattering of culinary adventurers second, drawn by the smell of the grill.
Recommended DishesCevapi, $6; burek, $7/lb.; mixed meat, $12
