Profile

Pichet Ong’s quietly glamorous Chinese-American eatery will have you racking your brain for synonyms for dark blue. Consider the wallpaper patterned with tattoo-ink dragons or the two overlong navy banquettes or the midnight-blue reticulated walls subdividing the dining space or the Persian-blue floor tiles or even the indigo walls in the men’s room. It’s not the only color in the space (the back wall is a rich scarlet backdrop for ceramic urns, sleeping Buddhas, and miniature Bruce Lees), but it definitely sets the tone. As to the menu, Ong’s offerings are equally cool. Some dishes are as much East-West as they are Chinese like the crab Rangoon nachos, which come on large wonton chips, and the eggplant with sesame tofu served on a toasted baguette. The pepper rating on the menu should not alarm you: If the four-pepper spicy-pork shumai is any indication, very spicy here means “comes with a kick” and not “fireman required.”

Sexy Sideshow

Don’t miss the glass display case of Kama Sutra figurines on your way to the bathroom.
