With its dingy linoleum, fluorescent lights, and battle-scarred takeout counter, this corner Chinese joint doesn’t look like anyone’s first choice for dinner. But the cooks bustling over steaming woks in Chan Yang’s kitchen whip up some surprisingly tasty dishes, healthy options among them. The Special Health Food section of the menu lists fifteen different meat, poultry, seafood, and vegetable combinations that are steamed rather than stir-fried, and served with brown rice and spicy garlic sauce on the side. All dishes come in pint- as well as quart-size portions, and diners can request light sauce if they're worried about sesame chicken or garlic scallops drowning in the carton.
