One of the few 24-hour eateries in the Financial District, Charlys has a captive audience of rushed office workers by day and stranded residents at night. Just a counter and a kitchen, the entire space runs only about ten feet deep, its porcelain tiling perpetually stained with grease, its wall menu sporting food photos so unappetizing they virtually dare you to order a chili cheese dog. Quantity trumps quality via generous tacos and 24-ounce burgers. Gritty, chewy, oily “New York style” pizza is also available from a partitioned-off side section. In an area starved for decent food, Charlys’s continued success proves that desperate times truly do call for desperate measures.
