Chez Henry is the third or fourth restaurant to occupy this Henry Street space in about as many years, and has a familiar, neat look—an open, dimly lit room with high ceilings, rows of small wooden tables pressed together, and recesses in the white walls holding stacks of wine bottles. Yet while the kitchen has the elements for success—quality ingredients and a French bistro menu large enough to offer variety without overreach—some of its preparations can be under- or over-dressed. The saving graces are an earthy side of potatoes gratin; seared scallops with caramelized endive and fresh cherry tomatoes in a rich, complex sauce; and a simple roasted half-chicken, moist with a crisp skin and seasoned with those previously absent Provencal herbs. The cooking is more or less on par with the menu: attractively printed, but suffering a few typos.
