Like the best Jean-Luc Godard film, the restaurant effortlessly creates a scene ripe for a tryst: navy damask banquettes, pressed tin ceilings, a tattered copy of Pascal’s Pensées on the shelf, and two walls of windows looking out on a Greenwich Village that’s all carriage houses and cobblestones, a city that seems yours alone. This intimate, votive-lit hideaway specializes in simple French food, showcasing the greatest hits of the Gallic scene—pâté, escargot, rack of lamb, and sausage. Still, there are plenty of lovely surprises: mushroom raviolini come in a gentle, earthy truffle broth; duck is bathed in a raspberry-cassis coulis that’s thankfully not too sweet; and free-range chicken medallions are as succulent and tasty as the menu’s most decadent offerings. Chef Richard Suzuki believes classic French cuisine has gotten dull, so he spices up the menu with elements from his native Japan: steak au poivre is given extra kick with the addition of soy sauce; ginger and sake make cameo appearances. His experiments seem to be working: devoted customers make reservations for Valentine’s Day up to a year in advance.
