Profile
ChipShop is legit Brit, from raunchy-sounding menu items like bangers and mash or spotted dick with custard to the brightly busy décor of English band posters and nationalistic memorabilia. Meals are served at small, round café tables in a back space upstaged by the prominent bar, a hint that culinary delights come second to the drinking. Indeed, the popular battered cod, presented in the shape of a whole fish, works best as hangover food; ditto for the namesake chips. Potatoes and meat play heavily on the rest of the menu, which subscribes fervently to a philosophy that foodstuffs are at an optimal state when battered and fried. You can cap the meal with the notorious deep-fried Twinkie or a second pint from the rotating sixteen beers on tap, like Tetley’s English Ale or Fuller’s ESB. On weekends, a traditional English breakfast expands your options further across the pond and, possibly, your waistline.
Recommended DishesShepherd’s pie, $10; chicken curry with chips, $10; bangers and mash, $10; Stilton, Granny Smith apple, and walnut salad, $8.50
