Profile
The most memorable dishes at this sexy Soho supper club are the beguiling burlesque dancers who make love to their boas, then shimmy out of sequined bodices to reveal strategically applied tassels. The Mediterranean fare may not elicit quite the same hoots of pleasure, but it’s innovative enough, particularly the tapas. Popcorn shrimp, despite its fast-food connotations, is a far cry from Popeye’s; cabrales, a blue-veined Spanish cheese, has a powerful, pungent personality well-suited to a bloody hanger steak. Even pizza reveals flair—dewy with truffle oil and layered with fingerling potatoes. In the spirit of speakeasies, Corio’s entrance is innocently low-key, giving way to a relaxed bar glowing with Tiffany lamps. Upstairs it gets seductive, with forest-green curtains, red lights, leather banquettes, and vintage wallpaper of a fleshy woman whose repeated image interconnects Escher-like across the lounge.
ExtraThe This Is Burlesque show takes place Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday at 8 p.m. $20 cover; reservations recommended.
