Profile

Camped at the crossroads of shopper-tourist central, the literally named Cornershop is the sort of place every neighborhood would be lucky to have. The staff is so friendly, the food so thoughtfully composed and prepared, and the prices so fair that you cannot but feel at ease here. Lofty, pressed-tin ceilings, an exposed brick wall, and unclothed tables underscore the fact that this is a casual, chit-chatty place. The menu is divided into small plates and omelets, salads, panini, and mains. The spinach salad, a lovely composition of colors, textures, and flavors, includes spinach, orange, red onion, avocado, tomato, and crispy rice noodles. The result is sweet and tart, crunchy and sharp, creamy and crunchy. Panini offerings include one very good Cuban sandwich, meaty and cheesy with the vinegary crunch of good gerkins. Of the main dishes, the pan-seared salmon reveals the kitchen’s attentiveness—the high-quality filet is seared to a crunchy crust, yet it remains appropriately, almost sushi-rare, on the inside. Its accompanying passion fruit sauce is arguably too assertively flavored, but like other things in the restaurant, it shows thought and care.

Reservations are only accepted for parties of six or more.

Went here for the first time last night. I had a burger; my friend had a spinach salad. I also ordered iced tea, which, when it came tasted like a can of Glade floral-scented air freshener had been liquified. I asked the server if there was plain iced tea (what she'd brought me was lychee); she said no, but named over a couple other choices, then concluded with a pissy: "You just have to ask." I went for the mint, which tasted like something created in a lab at Proctor & Gamble for a soap or toothpaste. In conclusion, the food was good; if you are a tea fan, well, enjoy a refreshing glass of water at Corner Shop Café.

I LOVE this place! I keep trying to branch out but have finally realized that this place is just about perfect. The food is always fresh, delicious, and interesting. My favorite dishes include the salmon nicoise panini, the truffled mac and cheese, the portabello and truffle burgers, and the prociutto and pear salad (SO good!). I'm sorry to hear about the other two reviewers who had bad service, I've never been treated poorly here. The wait staff is always accommodating and friendly and seats us as soon as possible. Even as a poor NYU grad student, I find the prices worth it for the food and the cozy atmosphere.
