Profile

Lower Manhattan seems to have found a one-man preservation crew in Soda Shop co-owner Craig Béro. Béro lent his restorative mojo to the Cosmopolitan Hotel and began renovating a space that what was once a ladies' lunch counter in the 1800s, and which is now the European-style Cosmopolitan Café. The menu reflects that desire, with items like pan au chocolat, espresso from the bar’s antique Fiorenzato machine, and the usual assortment of focaccia sandwiches, olives, and prosciutto. Dinner features only one item per night, dependent on what’s available that day at Greenwich Street’s mini-greenmarket and what Béro feels like cooking. The reconstruction of the space is meticulous, with artifacts including Béro’s own great-grandfather’s icebox and an original billboard from the hotel boasting “300 steam-heated rooms,” which Béro uncovered from the “vault” — underground tunnels once used for the city’s water supply.

I can not rave about Cosmopolitan Cafe enough... The food is top-notch (had desserts, pastries, cofee), and the service is a throwback to a grand era where people really cared about hospitality. I live on the UES, but wish this was my neighborhood cafe -- I would be there everyday! I am so happy that I stumbled upon CC whilst strolling through Tribeca. It's worth the commute, and I look forward to my next visit... soon.

Cosmopolitan Cafe is one of the most charming drop-ins in lower Manhattan. It is small and tables are close, making privacy limited. But the environment is exquisitely decorated, full of authenticity and Euro flavor, even though the decor comes from rural America. I've eaten in many European cafes and Cosmo is a precious joy for New Yorkers. The food is very fresh, uncomplicated and nicely served. I've been known to stop for coffee, walking to Soho, just to soak up the ambience. Whatever your mood upon arrival, you will be smiling when you leave. There's almost always a large, seasonal, welcoming display of flowers and veggies, beautifully arranged, to greet you. I'm a sensualist, and Cosmo gets 5-stars for being simply captivating.
