It’s hard to live up to 'ino, the beloved tiny Bedford Street restaurant that closed in March of 2013 after 15 years of business. But Cotenna, the cozy new Italian restaurant run by the owner of Aria, certainly tries: It’s an inexpensive, charming little place that serves an extensive menu of bruschetta, salumi, grilled meats and seafood, and traditional pastas. The prices are much better than what you’ll find in the West Village neighborhood—almost all items are in the low teens, and portions are sizable—but the quality isn’t stellar. Pastas arrived over-sauced, and simple dishes like grilled octopus and burrata lacked flavor. Perhaps it would help Cotenna to edit its menu and only focus on what it can do best: basic red-sauce Italian cooking. But the space is intimate and well-lit—a perfect date spot—so don’t hesitate to come here for a class of wine (there’s a cellar downstairs) and some cheese and prosciutto, which, after all, is pretty hard to get wrong.
