While it can't be easy keeping this circa-1923 nightclub young and vibrant, The Cotton Club's famous name continues to lure tourists to Harlem for a hearty dinner, a quick history lesson and the soothing strains of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." This location is not the original spot. The venue has moved twice: from 142nd St. to 47th St. in 1936, then back up to 125th St. in 1978, yet the appeal—live jazz performances recalling the era of Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway and Lena Horne—remains the same. Gospel Sunday brunch is extremely popular. But Monday night is becoming a quiet favorite when amateur and professional swing dancers jive to big band sounds. Although not a natural choice for dinner—buffet meals are available and rarely stray from traditional soul food dishes—the 175-seat, two-story restaurant is full of character, and offers a lot more sustenance than just food.
