Profile

Julieta Ballesteros has graduated from teeny Mexicana Mama in the village to a narrow earth-toned spot of her own. There she is in the open kitchen, a small superwoman with a couple of slow-moving sidekicks watching every move, dishing up stylish plates of refined cocina Mexicana. Ribbons of hanger steak fill her taquitos, painted with a tomato-chorizo paste and the Mexican cream that gives this spot its name. The pleasant afterburn of impeccably cooked scallops with avocado and small corn tostados sets off irrepressible moans of pleasure. All of us are equally taken by a raucous family of textures in a salad with peanut guajillo vinaigrette. Excuse my sticker shock, but it seems that $10 desserts are the sweet leveler now. I guess the prices indicate the new level of ambition here. I’d choose roasted tropical fruits in a tequila-spiked mango soup.

Our waiter was patient, knowledgeable, and helpful in getting us served promptly and efficiently, when we explained that we had an 8:00 pm concert to attend. The drinks were large and delicious, although to my taste the bartender had a light hand with the liquor. Given the volume (and given the price), I expected a more generous shot of tequila in those tall margaritas. The mushroom soup was rich, creamy, and had a serious kick to it. A ceviche made with minced shrimp was nice and tangy. Entrees were cooked to perfection, brilliantly seasoned, and beautifully presented. This is Mexican food taken to another level entirely. The only off note is that the space is small, and the tables are accordingly small and crowded together. Food like this deserves a more sumptuous environment.

Awesome food - Rude waiter!

I used a discounted offer I had for dining at Crema and thought I was treated unfairly because of it, but it seems like the poor service is the norm here! I was seated all the way in the back where is was extremely hot and where I couldn't enjoy the great music that was played. Rude waiter, mad at the world. The food is fantastic, had the steak tacos and Fish empanadas!
