A Staten Island Chinese food staple since 1981, this semiformal white-linen restaurant brings prix-fixe value and private-party rooms to the East Shore dining row of New Dorp Lane. In a solarium-like, 100-seat room with pastel napkins and dome chandeliers, waiters trot out Cantonese-American staples that hit and miss. Fried foods from chicken satay to deep-battered Grand Mariner shrimp distinct only for a tangy mayonnaise topping tame greasy hunger pangs, but that's about it. Spare ribs are less than succulent, and other dishes emerge too-heavily sauced, particularly pepper steak and token meat and veggie plates. A mildly flavored shrimp with lobster sauce takes a page from the motherland: thick, eggy, Cantonese-style gravy with scant bits of ground beef. Orange beef or tangerine chicken come pounded paper-thin and seared to tender crisp filets, sautéed with a sweet aroma of diced orange peels. Desserts are of the buy-it-yourself kind: ice-cream, canned pineapples, Jell-O, and almond cookies. But at decade-old prices, these simple treats are easy on the wallet. While this island mini-chain is far from the aromatic flash-cooking wok skills of Chinatown, it fills a sit-down Chinese-food dearth on the island.

Prix-fixe lunch, early-bird and prix-fixe dinners: A three-course lunch is served Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., ranging from $8.95 to $13.95. A four-course dinner menu is available for $24.95. Catering hall: The La Roma and Marocco rooms are available for private parties up to 80 and 150 guests, respectively. Menus range from $17.95 to $45 per person, excluding beverage plans.
