Profile

The best seats at this Latin restaurant next to the Wyndham Hotel in midtown are through the narrow, clubby-looking bar area, past the main dining room with white tablecloths and brown leather banquettes, and on a serene back patio with a small water fountain for coin-throwing wish-makers. Chef-owner Rene Hernandez, also of Don Pedro’s on the Upper East Side, aims to make diners forget they’re blocks from Macy’s with food he calls “Euro-Caribbean.” Lightly fried sea-bass patties go tropical over sweet mango-and-pineapple chutney; tender, melt-in-your-mouth oxtail stuffed into fried, cone-shaped piquillos make for a heartier, less-sweet starter. From the meat-heavy list of entrées, perfectly cooked skirt steak doesn’t need uncharacteristically bland chimichurri sauce drizzled on top, but the crispy yucca frites that come with it are as addictive as classic fries. Desserts like fresh fruit sorbets make for a nearly transporting finish.
