Custard Beach aims to bring a bit of the seaside to the most hectic of urban environments. Its transporting delicacy is soft yet dense ice cream custard, made of cream, sugar and natural flavors (with no air pumped to add volume), all whipped up fresh then served on a cake cone. Choosing a treat from the four flavors made daily—vanilla, chocolate and two specials like chocolate pretzel crunch or pistachio—or the homemade Italian ices is made slightly more complex by 14 different toppings, plus hot fudge and caramel. They also sell oversized brownies, sundaes, waffles, shakes and malteds, as well as an iced coffee topped with custard (for that afternoon sugar-caffeine jolt). For the more cautious, there are fat-free ices, low-fat custard, and fruit smoothies, served with or without frozen yogurt. But Custard Beach isn’t a place for dietary virtue—even the air, thick with the scents of caramel and spun sugar, must carry calories. But if you’re in the market for some milky, sweet indulgence, it’s nostalgic, ice-cold nirvana.
