The patriotism at Custom Wine Bar is clear, from the reclaimed upstate and Pennsylvania wood used to make the high tables and long bar to the all-American wine list: the mostly West Coast reds and whites are accompanied by a few domestic bottled beers and bourbons. Owner Dan Lathroum, (Manhattan’s Bar Veloce wine bars) and Stefan Mailvaganam (Bar Carrera) teamed up to give Williamsburg a relaxed and affordable destination that would showcase what the US-of-A has to offer. In the kitchen, they borrowed Bar Carrera’s chef, Ryan Bartlow, to create a menu of regional sandwiches, from Philly cheesesteaks and Chicago-style hot dogs down to fried shrimp po’boys and an Elvis-inspired peanut butter, banana, and bacon choice. Smaller bites include green tomatoes breaded in delicious cornmeal and fried, a simple grilled cheese, a variety of salads, and rotating meat-and-cheese plates. The only dessert on the menu is a set of four oozingly rich and satisfying brownies.Recommended Dishes
Fried green tomatoes, $5; Philly cheese steak, $9
