Profile

David Burke, veteran chef and inventor of the Cheesecake Pop and the Smoked Bacon Flavor Spray, is almost as well known for his zany packaged foods as for his whimsical, inventive cooking at davidburke & donatella. The culinary showman gets yet another stage at Bloomingdale's, a two-part operation along the 59th Street corridor. The Burke Bar Café is open for self-service breakfasts, morphing into a café at lunch and wine bar at night, with a list heavy on half bottles and fifteen selections by the glass. Expect such Burkisms as "cheeseburker" sliders, spicy potato-chip pizza, "millionaire's meatloaf" with lobster whipped potatoes and lobster bordelaise, and roasted "angry hen in law"—most of which will also be available to go next door at Burke in the Box.

On the downslide

As a fan of David Burke's neologisms, I was enchanted with this store-facade cafe when it first opened, but no more. Who wants crusty old, cold cheese popovers? Such a bread plate is a fitting prelude, however, for entrees that sound inventive on the menu and prove not very upon delivery. Service is sporadic and overburdened. At one point, having paused to rest our forks for a moment, we nearly had our entrees plucked away; later we stood, coated, as repeated requests for the check went ignored. At this price level, it seems reasonable to expect a little more in the way of politesse than that found at a Woolworth's lunch counter.
