Dawat goes through phases: Sometimes it's New York's best and most creative Indian restaurant; other times it's just a very good one (in which case, if it's anything less than outstanding, it's overpriced). The flavors, inspired by Indian actress and cookbook author Madhur Jaffrey, have a tendency to default to somewhat softer, Americanized norms, but clear communication with the waitstaff can fix that. Dawat thankfully avoids the hokey decorative pitfalls of New York's innumerable cookie-cutter Indian restaurants. It's a sleek room, with service to match.
