Profile

There was a time, not so long ago, when going out for Italian food meant going to a place like Dazie's—Tony Bennett singing in the background, faux Roman columns lining the walls, and clams casino on the menu. Built decades before the more recent wave of authentic Italian cuisine, this Sunnyside spot still cooks the kind of American-Italian food most New Yorkers grew up with—homemade minestrone, eight kinds of veal, and a nice amount of parm. Fresh Italian bread at the start of the meal sets a promising tone, but some of the dishes could use more punch. A plate of scallops Provincale is tangy, but more so from the marinara sauce than the seafood. Stronger offererings include the thick, juicy grilled pork chops, the stracciatella alla Romana, a flavorful chicken broth with spinach, bits of egg and a topping of parmesan, and a lively tiramisu. But what makes Dazie's is the feeling of the place, enhanced by attentive waiters in vests, and a piano player playing romantic standards by the bar.
