With caricatures of owner Jerry Della Femina’s more famous guests hung across one wall, it’s hard to resist scoping out the large, candle-lit dining room to see who’s perched in front of the fireplace or at the long, roomy bar sipping a glass of Prosecco. Visuals are all you're going to get, however, because the acoustics nix any potential eavesdropping. What does come through loud and clear are the big, pure flavors on chef Michael Rozzi’s Italian-ish, locally minded and seasonal menu, which delightes in disarming details, like the vanilla vinaigrette that adds a sweet, creative spike to the 18-month aged Parma ham. And while Rozzi knows his way around classics like rack of lamb, seafood shows him at his best: Crisp-skinned Montauk shares a plate with Long-Island-local red-skin carrots, lima beans, and chunks of lobster. Smokers take refuge in season on the outdoor patio. The old-school ad man in Della Femina seems to encourage expense-account pricing. But with Rozzi’s menu as the hook, at least he doesn’t have to put on the hard sell.
