Profile

Doo Zo’s below-sidewalk-level digs aren’t much to speak of: A hockey-stick-shaped sushi bar stands across from a smattering of tables, several of which face an awkward view of storage shelves. Its perfunctory décor mixes Japanese banners and a lone netsuke panel, with a huge, skylighted back space that’s often kept dark, underscoring the fact that takeout and delivery are the real engines of this business. But Doo Zo lacks both long lines and high prices, in contrast to nearby Tomoe. And while dishes like sizzling salmon teriyaki and tempura-breaded age tofu show the kitchen’s skills, sushi dominates the menu here, a la carte, in combo platters, or in elaborate rolls. A decadent Bleecker Roll begins with shrimp tempura, battered in a sweet hot pepper sauce, surrounded by rice and topped by colorful alternating slabs of tuna and salmon. Whitefish and mint leaf, augmented with spicy fish roe, form an appealing combo roll. The dubious interior may evoke a place on its way out, but Doo Zo’s large portions, which look even more generous with a 10% student discount, seem to secure its spot on NYU’s friendly turf.
