This West Village spot successfully sidesteps the frat-party pitfall that troubles so many Irish pubs in favor of a proper pint and comforting grub. Two crimson-walled rooms house a long, narrow bar area, full of jovial patrons planted on cherry-wood stools; a cozy dining section has well-spaced tables and homey, shaded lamps. It’s an inviting place to settle in for snacks like juicy mini-burger ‘sliders’ on brioche or fish and chips. Classic mains such as a hearty beef and Guinness pie and corned beef and cabbage (offered in winter) hit the spot, but the skilled kitchen is far from stranded on the Emerald Isle, sparkling brightest in seasonally changing French dishes. The artisinal cheese board shows equal refinement; the extensive beer list and expert hand at cocktails make a great case for getting your very own Irish up, no matter where your passport says.
