Profile

This West Village spot successfully sidesteps the frat-party pitfall that troubles so many Irish pubs in favor of a proper pint and comforting grub. Two crimson-walled rooms house a long, narrow bar area, full of jovial patrons planted on cherry-wood stools; a cozy dining section has well-spaced tables and homey, shaded lamps. It’s an inviting place to settle in for snacks like juicy mini-burger ‘sliders’ on brioche or fish and chips. Classic mains such as a hearty beef and Guinness pie and corned beef and cabbage hit the spot, but the skilled kitchen is far from stranded on the Emerald Isle, sparkling brightest in a French dish of perfectly rendered duck confit on a soothing, creamy bed of black trumpet mushroom risotto. Brioche bread pudding with rum-soaked raisin sauce shows equal refinement; the extensive beer list and expert hand at cocktails make a great case for getting your very own Irish up, no matter where your passport says.
